Prior to joining the reinsurance industry, the professional career of Dr. KAREKEZI started in 1991 with the primary insurance industry where he served practically in all the financial, marketing, technical and reinsurance departments at senior management levels of the leading insurance companies in Burundi and Rwanda, up to the position of CEO of SONARWA, the then insurance leader of Rwanda.
He joined the reinsurance industry, first as a Board Director of Africa Re Group for 3 years, and he fully joined the Group in 2009 as its Deputy MD/COO for 2 years before he rose to the current position of Group MD/CEO.
Dr. KAREKEZI holds various professional and academic certifications, diplomas, and degrees, awarded by prestigious institutions around the world, including a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics, a Master’s Degree in Management, Postgraduate Diplomas in Business Administration, an Honorary Doctorate in Business Administration, and an Earned Doctorate in Business Administration.
He speaks fluently English, French, Swahili, and some other African languages.
Since 1996, he has contributed significantly to the development of the insurance and reinsurance industries in Africa through his involvement and leadership in various national, regional, and continental initiatives and organizations. He has participated actively, as speaker, in seminars, conferences, symposia and other fora across the world, particularly on issues of insurance development and reduction of insurance protection gap, risk management for development, InsurTech, and in general on issues of economic development and leadership.
Dr. KAREKEZI has served as chair and/or member of governing bodies of various financial institutions and foundations in Africa and at the global stage. He is currently the Chairman of Africa Re (South Africa) Limited, Chairman of Africa Retakaful Company (Egypt), Member of the Executive Committee of the African Insurance Organization (AIO) where he chairs the Finance Committee, Chairman of the AIO Foundation, Chairperson of the Governing Council of the Alliance of African Multilateral Financial Institutions (AAMFI), Member of the Executive Council of the International Insurance Society (IIS) and Member of the Steering Committee of the Insurance Development Fund (IDF).

Dr. Islam Azzam is acting as the Executive Chairman of The Financial Regulatory Authority (FRA) in accordance with the Presidential decree No. 116 for the year 2026. He is also a Board Member at the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE). Since April 2026, Dr. Islam was elected as the Chair of the International Organization of Securities Commission (IOSCO) Growth and Emerging Markets Committee (GEMC) and the Vice Chair of IOSCO Board.
Dr. Azzam has held numerous leadership positions, most notably serving as Executive Chairman of the Egyptian Exchange for a one-year term from August 2025 to March 2026, and Deputy Chairman of the Financial Regulatory Authority (FRA) from January 2021 to August 2025 during which he oversaw the capital market, insurance, and non-banking financial sectors.
He previously served as Advisor to the Chairman of the Mortgage Finance Authority from 2007 to 2009, and as Assistant to the Chairman of FRA from 2003 to 2005. He was also Managing Director of the SME Investment Fund “Bedaya” and Advisor to the Minister of Investment. Dr. Azzam began his career as an Economic Analyst in the Market Surveillance Department at the FRA.
Academically, Dr. Azzam is Professor of Finance at the American University in Cairo (AUC), where he chaired the Finance Department and the Graduate Studies Program in Finance from 2005 to 2021. He also served as Assistant Professor of Economics at the Faculty of Commerce, Suez Canal University; Visiting Professor of Finance at Stellenbosch University, South Africa; Visiting Professor of Finance at the Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport, Egypt; Visiting Assistant Professor of Economics at the Faculty of Economics and Political Science, Cairo University; Visiting Assistant Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics; and Lecturer of Economics at the University of California, Irvine, USA.

He also holds a Diploma in Real Estate Finance from the University of Pennsylvania, USA; master’s in economics from the University of California, Irvine; master’s in economics from the American University in Cairo; and a Bachelor of Economics from the Faculty of Economics and Political Science, Cairo University.
He has published several research papers in internationally refereed academic journals in the fields of finance, econometrics, and monetary policy.

Mrs. Kanayo Awani is the Executive Vice President, Intra-African Trade and Export Development at Afreximbank. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nigeria and a Master of Public Administration in International Trade and Finance from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government, Cambridge, USA and a recipient of the Edward S. Mason Fellowship in Public Policy and Management from Harvard.
She has garnered extensive banking experience with Citigroup in Nigeria, serving for nearly 17 years and leaving as the Vice President and Head of Industrial & Commercial Corporates before joining Afreximbank in 2009. As the Executive Vice President, she provides strategic and operational leadership in implementing the Bank's Intra-African trade, industrialization and export development objectives, in support of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).
Her leadership and contribution to the continent’s banking and trade finance landscape has received global recognition with several awards including, Top 100 Most Influential Person of African Descent by MIPAD, 2020; Africa Financial Industry Summit (AFIS) Woman Leader Award, 2022; Forbes Afrique’s list of “The 50 Most Influential African Women,” 2023; Africa Inspirational Personality of the Year by the Africa Women Impact Summit (AWIS), 2023; African Diaspora Advisory Board (ADAB) Global Woman Award in Washington, D.C. Mohamed Mahran assumed the position of Chief Executive Officer in August– 2025
He held the position of CEO of Misr Insurance Holding Company from Jan 2023 till June, 2025.
He was Vice Chairman of Allianz Companies in Egypt in 2019; he has also been holding the position of Managing Director of Allianz Insurance Company – Egypt since Nov 2012.
Mahran holds several esteemed roles across an array of reputable insurance and governmental organizations where he had assumed the roles of Chairman of the Executive Council at The Insurance Federation of Egypt. He is currently member of the High Advisory Committee to the Board of Directors at the Egyptian Financial Supervisory Authority, Member of the Board of Directors at Egyptian TPL Governmental Fund. Mahran is also a Professor of Practice at Cairo University, Faculty of Commerce.
Mahran kicked off his career 34 years ago in the Aviation Reinsurance Department at Misr Insurance Company. In 1993, he joined the National Company for Cooperative Insurance “TAWUNIYA” in Saudi Arabia as Head of Motor Underwriting then he was appointed as Chief Underwriter, Property Insurance in 2000.
In 2001, Mahran joined the American Insurance Group “AIG” in Cairo where he occupied the post of Claims Director. In early 2006, he assumed the role of Regional Claims Manager for the Middle East region based in Dubai, UAE, where he has overseen the operation for claims in eight countries in the Gulf region in addition to Lebanon.
At end of 2007, Mahran was entrusted with the opening of AIG’s branch in Qatar where he continued to hold several positions there until 2010 when he occupied the post of General Manager of Zurich Insurance Group in Bahrain and Kuwait, until coming back to Egypt in 2012.
Mahran holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce in 1985 and a high postgraduate diploma in General Insurance from Cairo University in Egypt. He is also a Certified Takaful Professional (CTP) from Academy for International Modern Studies, United Kingdom and Associate Underwriting, AICPCU.

Mr. Abderrahim CHAFFAI holds an MBA from HEC Paris and a degree in Engineering from the
Institute of Statistics at the University of Paris. After gaining initial experience at SANAD, he joined ZURICH Insurance as Deputy Managing Director.

Mr. Olusegun Omosehin is the Commissioner for Insurance and Chief Executive of the National Insurance Commission, Nigeria. A seasoned insurance professional with over 30 years of leadership experience, he has played pivotal roles in strategic planning, risk management, and organizational transformation across leading insurance institutions.
He is a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (FIIN). Mr. Omosehin holds degrees in Political Science, International Law and Diplomacy, and Economics, and is an alumnus of the Said Business School, University of Oxford. Dr. Abiba Zakariah holds a Doctorate in Management from the Swiss Management Centre, Geneva, and a Master’s degree in Marketing from the University of Ghana, Legon. She is a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute (UK) and the Chartered Insurance Institute Ghana, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing Ghana, a member of the Institute of Risk Management Professionals Ghana and holds an LLB degree.
With over 30 years’ experience, she has served in senior leadership roles across the insurance industry, including Managing Director of Ghana Reinsurance Company Ltd and Group Chief Operating Officer of WAICA Reinsurance. She was appointed Acting Commissioner of Insurance by the President of Ghana.
Dr. Zakariah founded the Chartered Insurance Ladies Association of Ghana (CILAG) and has served on several national and international boards. She is a multi-award-winning insurance professional and an ordained Pastor of the Assemblies of God Church, Ghana.

Delphine Traoré is the Chief Executive Officer of SanlamAllianz General Insurance since September 2023, following the success of the combination of Allianz and Sanlam activities on the African continent.
Prior to this appointment, she was the first African woman to hold the highest regional position within the Allianz group: she has been Regional CEO of Allianz Africa from November 2021 to August 2023, while retaining her previous positions as Member of the Board of Directors and Chief Operating Officer, which she has held since 2017. First African woman to hold the highest regional position within the Allianz group, she was the only black woman on the Executive Committee (Comex) of the Allianz group.

Rebekah Ratliff is an international mediator and arbitrator with the Judicial Arbitration Mediation Service (JAMS), providing dispute resolution services worldwide. She is a credentialed former commercial insurance complex claims professional with more than 25 years of experience evaluating, negotiating and settling casualty claims loss matters, nationwide and internationally for global carriers and she holds a Casualty Claims Law Specialist (CCLS) designation. Having a wide range of subject matter expertise, she managed and held the authority to negotiate and resolve complex matters, with settlements totaling in the millions. After leaving her claims career, she founded Capital City Mediations, LLC, a mediation, arbitration and consulting firm and joined the Judicial Arbitration and Mediation Service (JAMS) in 2020, becoming the first African American non-attorney ever, to be invited to the JAMS panel of neutrals. Ms. Ratliff is the Secretary and Global Relationships Liaison of the National African American Insurance Association (NAAIA).
Proudly of West African descent, she is actively engaged in insurance community on the Continent, as a member of AIWA and CILAG. She serves as the 1st Vice Chair of the National Bar Association’s Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Section and will serve in the upcoming administration as the Chief Risk Management Advisor to the President. She also serves on the American Bar Association’s Dispute Resolution Section Council. Ms. Ratliff is a published author and globally sought-after presenter, panelist, and lecturer in the insurance and legal industries, commanding audiences from all over the world. She is the visionary and founder of HBCU IMPACT®, a non-profit created to increase diverse representation in the insurance, risk management, financial services and legal industries by enabling a space for interaction between industry recruiters and students from historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). The focus is to attract, educate and employ student participants into insurance-related careers. HBCU IMPACT initiatives enable relationships for global exposure, industry licensing, internships and employment.
Ms. Ratliff is an architect of the historic MOU signed in 2025, between the National Bar Association (USA) and the AfCFTA Secretariat. Along with her Co-chair, she planned and served as a panelist in an insurance-focused program held at the IMF on the margins of the IMF World Bank Fall Meetings (October 2025), offering insights on how the insurance, financial services and legal communities will enable sustainable economic growth and rule-based trade integration across Africa.
Ms. Ratliff is an adjunct professor at Howard University School of Law, teaching insurance-related curriculum, that she created and designed. She is the recipient of various prestigious awards to include the 2024 Global Women of Excellence U.S. Congressional Honor, 2023 Business Insurance Alonzo Herndon (Diversity) Award, Business Insurance Women To Watch (2021), Insurance Business America (IBA) Elite Women, IBA HOT 100 List, National Bar Association Outstanding Service Award and the American Bar Association’s inaugural Ladder Award. As Deputy Managing Director and Head of Insurance and Investment Funds at the Bermuda Monetary Authority (Authority or BMA), Gerald Gakundi is a member of the BMA’s Senior Leadership Team, contributing to the development and implementation of the Authority’s strategies and policies, with a specific focus on leading the teams supervising all (re)insurance and investment funds licensed entities.
Mr Gakundi has over 25 years of experience working in the insurance industry, including almost 20 of those in Bermuda. Mr Gakundi joined the Authority in 2010 as Assistant Director, Supervision (Insurance). He has extensive knowledge of Bermuda’s insurance regulatory environment, which has allowed him to be an active contributor in the BMA’s international engagement efforts, including leading dialogue with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA) and numerous other insurance regulatory authorities. Over the years, he has also assisted in developing and implementing the Authority’s long and medium- term insurance supervision strategy and policy.

Previously, Anthony spent 17 years at Swiss Re, where he led global reinsurance strategy, drove large M&A transactions, and managed a large investment portfolio across direct private equity and strategic participations globally as well as in Africa. His career began in private equity, giving him a strong foundation in financial and operational analysis.

She currently serves as Secretary General of the Insurers Federation of Egypt (IFE), where she leads national insurance sector coordination, regulatory dialogue, inclusive insurance initiatives, institutional transformation, and strategic partnerships with local and international stakeholders. Throughout her career, Hadil has played a key role in advancing financial protection solutions for underserved communities, developing national strategies, and strengthening regulatory and institutional frameworks. Prior to joining IFE, she served as Head of Emerging Customers & Governmental Affairs and Board Member at AXA Egypt, where she led inclusive insurance strategy, oversaw emerging business lines, and contributed to the development of Egypt’s first proposed microinsurance company in partnership with Egypt Post. Her professional journey also includes leadership and technical roles with PlaNet Finance Middle East, the Financial Regulatory Authority (FRA), and Environmental Quality International (EQI), where she contributed to Egypt’s first National Microfinance Strategy, regulatory reforms, donor-funded development programs, gender mainstreaming initiatives, and consumer protection frameworks. Hadil has extensive experience working with international organizations and development partners including the International Labour Organization (ILO), African Development Bank (AfDB), European Union (EU), UN Women, and other regional institutions. Her expertise spans financial inclusion, inclusive insurance, MSME development, public-private partnerships, policy dialogue, institutional strengthening, and impact-driven program design. She holds a Master of International Business Administration from ESLSCA and a B.Sc. in Chemistry from the American University in Cairo. She is also a Certified Board Director and an accredited trainer in MSME development, microinsurance, and social performance management. Fluent in Arabic and English, and proficient in French, Hadil is recognized for her strategic leadership, policy expertise, and commitment to expanding access to sustainable financial protection solutions across emerging markets.

Dr. Baghayo A. Saqware is a Commissioner of Insurance and Chief Executive Officer of Tanzania Insurance Regulatory Authority (TIRA) from 2017-2019 and 2022 to date.
Dr. Saqware started his career as compliance officer with National Social Security Fund (NSSF) and later he joined Institute of Finance Management and Tanzania Institute of Accountancy (TIA) as a lecturer in Insurance, Social Protection and Risk Management subjects for the past 19 years.
Prior to joining TIRA as a Commissioner of Insurance, he has held number management positions; he was Dean of Faculty of Insurance and Social Protection at the Institute of Finance Management (IFM), Ministerial Health Insurance Coordinator at the Ministry of Health (MoH) and Secretary to Insurance and Social Protection Technical Team that advices Bank of Tanzania on Insurance and Social Protection related matters.
Dr. Saqware has extensive experience in Leadership, Research and Consultancies at varies levels. He serves in various Board of Directors.
He was a Chairman of Finance and Operation Committee of the National Health Insurance Scheme for 6 years and Board Member of Occupational Safety and Health Authority (OSHA) and Africa College of Insurance and Social Protection (ACISP).

Israel Muchena is the Managing Director of Agricultural Insurance at Hollard Moçambique Companhia de Seguros. He holds a Master of Arts Degree in Development Studies from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University of South Africa and Bachelor of Arts Dual Honours Degree in Modern Languages from the University of Zimbabwe. He is also a Certified Expert in Climate Risk Management and in Microinsurance of the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management, Germany. He has vast experience of doing insurance and reinsurance business in the following markets: Angola, Botswana, Brazil, Cape Verde, Mauritius, Mozambique, Nigeria, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
Israel is a non-executive director of Futuro Microbank S.A. He is also the Vice-Coordinator of the Insurance Promotion Working Group of the National Financial Inclusion Strategy of Mozambique. He has held senior leadership positions with both Old Mutual and Fidelity Life Assurance, two of the largest and most respected insurance organisations in Zimbabwe.
